Dealing with the holidays

by Marsha Pugh on 12/31/13

It is New Years Eve and soon the fireworks and gun fire will be sounding in midnight.

I plan to stay home and watch some DVD's this year.  Christmas was hectic and we have more visiting to do over the weekend, so staying home tonight isn't bad enough to make me pout.

My favorite TV show will be resuming in two weeks so I can catch up by watching a marathon season 1 or the first 8 episodes of season 2.

In the meantime all the Iggies are curled up on the sofa under blankets or asleep in donut beds by the wood stove.  They are glad to be back to normal.  No company, no wrapping, no shopping, and no baking that keeps me away from being their favorite cushion.

We did have a wee bit of a stomach upset,  Allison received a few too many rich treats so she is on a bland diet for a few days.  She is so rarely sick that she surprsied me.  Someone must have given her something that I didn't approve.  It happens because IGs cn be very earthy and find the most interesting and impalatable items to eat, so I am usually prepared with Lambert's Pectillin from Pet Co.  I keep it on hand to soothe a gurgly tummy or mild diarrhea.  A few doses and she will be back to normal.

Here is hoping everyone had a very Merry Christams and wishing everyone a Safe, Happy and Healthy New Year.

what to do on a cold rainy day

by Marsha Pugh on 02/26/13

Since it was windy, cold and raining, all the dogs have been under blankets on the sofa or in donut beds around the wood stove.

In order to keep them occupied when they got restless, we did nails, teeth and some training.

Then we settled back down to watch the new CW series Beauty and the Beast which I downloaded.  The network doesn't advertise it, so some friends from Sweden told me about the series and I caught up today.  It is awesome and I am very happy that the dogs were willing to be still and quiet while I watched TV.

The Celtic Classic in York, Pa

by Marsha Pugh on 02/25/13

Once again, MAIGC is hosting specialties and supported entries at the Celtic Classic at the York, PA fairgrounds.  The shows are being held from March 13 through March 17, 2013.

In addition to supporting the all breed shows, there will be two Italian Greyhound specialties, one on Friday, March 15 and one on Saturday March 16.  In addition, we are holding a puppy fun match on Thursday, March 14, a costume contest and a parade of rescue IGs.

It's a busy schedule and we couldn't pull it off without the help and support of MAIGC members.  We have been working on this for a year and have some fabulous trophies to offer the winners and some surprises in store for the participants.

We hope to see you there!  visit MAIGC facebook page for more information.

Family Reunions

by Marsha Pugh on 08/15/12

Last weekend was our family reunnion, held at my brother and sister in law's home on the waterfront of Virignia.  It's a quiet area with summer homes and a deep water inlet that leads out to the Chesapeake Bay.

As with all family reunions, therre are plenty of kids and dogs attending.  Having all the water toys imaginable, the kids were busy taking turns tubing, water skiing and diving off the pier to swim.

Later that afternoon my brother in law got out the "man toys" which were fireworks and his canon.  Most of the dogs and kids and women were inside or on the porch while the guys were all anxious to set off the fireworks and shoot the canon.

One dog, a cute puggle named Pete, was mistakenly left outside but his owner was present and ready to hoop and holler.

Well, one shot of the canon and that poor dog was gone!  It took a few minutes before his owner realized it and then panic erupted.

Just the previous spring, our Italian Greyhound Club (MAIGC) held a semianr on finding lost dogs, including dogs that were missing for days. The information shared at that seminar proved to be priceless.

Pete's owner was beside himself with guilt and worry and the kids were all running around screaming Pete's name, flailing arms and creating general chaos.

Once they got organized and quiet, sending out a search party in various directions amde more sense, so that's what we did.  One went by car, one up the road and the rest traveled along the waterfront.

Thankfully, Pete responds to his name and he was very happy to be found.  He gripped his owner with his front paws around his neck and hung on for a very long time.

flea and tick prevention

by Marsha Pugh on 08/03/12

Ticks have been terrible this summer.  A mild winter and a drought has really brought them out.  Even walking down the middle of the driveway doesn't stop the ticks from climbing up the dogs and my legs.

when it is time to medicate with a top spot, I am going to try Advantix II.  I have been using Frontline Plus for years and swear by the product but it does not repel the ticks.  They must attach to the dog, then they are killed in short order.  But hopefully, the Advantix will repel the ticks and keep them from climbing up the dogs legs.

My dogs go frantic when they feel a tick on them so it is an unpleasant walk when they are constantly checking themselves for ticks.

We shall see.
